A native New Orleanian, and graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. with a Masters in Painting and Printmaking, Trenchard maintains a studio/home on Woodlawn Lake, San Antonio. Upon her arrival in San Antonio in the late 80’s, Trenchard began experimenting with the Mexican mallet and chisel technique of papel picado. Since then, she has written a book, “Mexican Paper Cutting”, published by Lark in 1998, which sold out. She is now working with Trinity Press on an expanded publication on the subject. Trenchard maintains a collection of paper cuts from her international travels and has curated exhibits of her papel picado and Buddhist Burial Paper holdings. Trenchard taught at SAC and Palo Alto for ten years and continues to present lectures, demonstrations and workshops on paper cutting and shadow puppetry, which she studied in Indonesia. Her permanent installations are on view at the ATT Center, South TX Blood and Tissue Center, the Grand Hyatt, 136 Grandview, the Kennedy Apartments at Brooks City Base, VIA bus shelters in San Antonio, and cut metal panels in Cleveland Park, downtown El Paso.
This Larks Books publication is out of print, but can be ordered through Amazon.
Trenchard is working with Trinity Press on an expanded exploration of the subject, focused on the historical evolution and current trends of this unique art form.
